9th Ri.MED scientific Symposium, October 26-27, 2015, Rome, Italy

Written by David Miller

On October 26-27, 2015 the 9th Ri.MED scientific Symposium will take place under the topic "From personalized medicine to big data".

Researchers now have access to a tremendous amount of information from electronic health records, digital images, and molecular analyses of genes, proteins, and metabolites. The challenge is to find strategies that enable physicians and scientists to sort through all of the collected information efficiently and effectively to find meaningful relationships that lead to new insights in health and disease. These advances in our ability to generate, store, and manipulate enormous amounts of biological and clinical data, combined with the development of powerful diagnostic tools derived from basic science, significantly enhance the potential to treat individual patients with targeted treatments, and not “average” patients with one-size- fits-all therapies. Precision, or personalized, medicine is an innovative approach to disease prevention and treatment that takes into account the genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that shape individual vulnerability to illness and response to therapy and then applies that knowledge to improve patient outcomes. The convergence of big data and precision medicine has the potential to revolutionize the way we diagnose, treat, and prevent diseases to benefit both patients and society.

The Ri.MED Foundation was established in 2006 with an international partnership between the Italian Government, the Region of Sicily, the Italian National Research Council (CNR), the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC).

The Foundation, based in Palermo, promotes, supports and leads biomedical and biotechnological research projects, with emphasis on the translation of innovative results into clinical practice.

Registration deadline: October 18, 2015

More information on the symposium and the registration form is available here.

Please note: Attendance is free, but admission will be allowed according to maximum sitting availability of the room. Male participants are kindly requested to wear jacket and tie.
