Twenty years ago, Springhill Medical Center completed the hospital’s first open heart surgery. Adding open heart surgery capabilities was the next step in growing the hospital’s newly launched cardiac service line. Today, Cardiac Care at Springhill includes many firsts and unique procedures only available at this hospital!
“Once we had the heart surgery capability, we were able to do more advanced cath lab procedures,” said President and CEO Mr. Jeff St. Clair. “And, in 1999, we opened a unique, comprehensive Heart Center that housed our entire cardiac program – from diagnostics to surgery to rehabilitation – all under one roof. It is still the first and only heart care center of its kind in the Mobile area.”
Today, the full range of cardiac surgery services includes: bypass surgery, valve surgery, MAZE procedures (atrial fibrillation treatment), minimally invasive mitral valve replacement, pulmonary embolectomy, aortic aneurysm repair, back-up for high-risk cath procedures, and more than 6,000 total heart surgery cases to date!
Our comprehensive Cath Lab procedures include: 430 PCIs, 1700 diagnostic caths annually, coordination with Emergency Services for STEMI patients suffering a heart attack, full range of EP procedures, peripheral/carotid procedures, endovascular aortic aneurysm repair, FIRST in Mobile to offer Impella Therapy (Ventricular Assist Device), FIRST in the region to offer TAVR (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement) – more than 200 cases to date, and EKOS treatment for submassive pulmonary embolus.
“It’s our commitment to the basic principle of caring for and saving human life that Springhill was founded that helped us overcome many hurdles to get our cardiac program off the ground.” Mr. St. Clair explains. “And, it’s the people we help every day that keep us determined to grow and enhance our program so that our community will have access to the very best heart care!”Original Article
