The GLP-1 drug semaglutide — the medicine behind Ozempic and Wegovy — did more than trim weight in old mice: it extended their lifespan and slowed multiple signs of aging, a new study reports.
Researchers gave semaglutide to 20-month-old female mice (roughly late-middle-age) for three months. Treated animals lived a median of nearly 100 days longer than untreated controls, and showed better muscle and cognitive function, less inflammation, and improved regenerative capacity. The work — from the NIH’s National Institute on Aging (Rafael de Cabo) and UC Berkeley (Danica Chen) — was published in Nature.
Not just calorie restriction
Because GLP-1 drugs reduce appetite, a key question was whether the benefits simply came from eating less. So the team compared semaglutide to calorie restriction. While both improved many measures, semaglutide-treated mice surpassed baseline in exploratory behavior, spatial memory and blood-sugar control — suggesting the drug “taps into a biological pathway independent of calorie restriction.”
Why it matters — and the caveat
GLP-1 drugs already show wide-ranging benefits (heart, kidney, liver), and this adds aging biology to the list — hinting they might influence fundamental aging processes, not just weight. But the authors are explicit: the findings “do not imply that similar results could be achieved immediately in humans.” This is mouse research; human studies would be needed to know whether any anti-aging effect translates.
