Novo Nordisk — the Danish drugmaker behind the blockbuster GLP-1 medicines Ozempic and Wegovy — is partnering with Anthropic to deploy its AI models across drug development and research, declaring an ambition to become “the world’s most AI-driven healthcare company.”

What the deal covers

The company plans to put Anthropic’s AI to work in several areas: testing Claude Science on the R&D workflows expected to benefit most, using frontier models to support software development and “agentic” engineering (AI systems that can carry out multi-step tasks), and generally scaling AI adoption across the organization. The emphasis is on scientific reasoning — helping researchers analyze data, draft and interrogate documents, and move faster through the notoriously slow work of developing a drug. No financial terms were disclosed.

Why drug developers want AI

Bringing a medicine to market famously takes a decade or more and billions of dollars, with a huge share of that effort going into data analysis, documentation and iteration. AI tools that can summarize literature, reason over complex biology, generate and review code, and help prepare the mountains of regulatory paperwork promise to compress timelines and free scientists for higher-value work. “Joining forces with Anthropic will supercharge our R&D organization,” said Novo CEO Mike Doustdar.

A clear competitive dynamic has formed: the biggest drugmakers are racing to lock in AI capabilities, betting that whoever integrates these tools best will gain an edge in discovering and developing medicines.
