Mixed-reality headsets are heading into the operating room. Stryker has received FDA De Novo authorization for SportSuite Vision — the first surgical application cleared for intraoperative use with Apple’s Vision Pro headset.
The app overlays digital content directly in the surgeon’s field of view, blending the physical operating room with arthroscopic camera images, CT data, and Stryker’s HipCheck and HipMap planning tools. The goal: reduce a surgeon’s reliance on multiple wall-mounted OR monitors and enable a more streamlined, ergonomic workflow.
First real-world use
On September 1, 2026, Stryker announced that the first procedure using SportSuite Vision — a hip arthroscopy — was completed at Duke Health, by Dr. Chad Mather III. It marks an early milestone for “spatial computing” in surgery.
Why it matters
Surgeons routinely glance away from the patient to check images on separate screens. Bringing those views into a headset — anchored in the surgeon’s line of sight — could improve focus and ergonomics. The De Novo pathway is used for novel, lower-to-moderate-risk device types, so this authorization also creates a regulatory template for future mixed-reality surgical tools. It’s a first-of-its-kind clearance, and real-world adoption will show how much it helps in practice.
